Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Call Deadline: 31-Aug-2012

Meeting Description:

In the last two decades of the twentieth century, there were important developments in two separate research strands within linguistics: cognitive linguistics and corpus linguistics. In the first of these, cognitive linguistics, metaphor became recognised as central to thought and pervasive in language. In corpus linguistics, rapid technological developments enabled researchers to study vast collections of texts very quickly, using specialised software. This led to a review of our understanding of language structure, and researchers realised that for English, at least, the organisation of words is perhaps more important than grammar in shaping text. These two developments have come together in the corpus study of metaphor. Corpora have enabled us to test the predictions made by cognitive linguists about language, and have led to a more detailed and complex picture of how we use metaphor.

The goal of this one-day workshop is to provide a discussion forum for researchers, who have an interest in metaphor, corpus linguistics, or both, to present their recent findings, exchange ideas and address new questions in the field.

Confirmed Invited Speaker:

Alice Deignan (University of Leeds, author of Metaphor and Corpus Linguistics)

This workshop is sponsored by the English Language and Literature Association of Korean (ELLSK, http://www.ellak.or.kr) and to be held as part of the 2012 ELLSK International Conference from December 11 through 14 at the same venue, Busan, Korea.
