Dear LINGUIST List readers,

Earlier in the week, we told you a bit about reviews. Some have asked us, just how do our reviews work? 
So, we thought we'd share with you a bit more about our reviews services and tell you why you should donate
to support the good work we do!:

We handle reviews from start to finish, beginning with an "available for review" list (the monthly "AFR"), 
listing all the books that have been announced on LINGUIST for the last two months.  Then until the 21st 
of each month readers can sign up to review books that interest them. Sign-up closes on the 21st, and 
before the end of the month, we match books with reviewers. For successful matches, it is really important 
that we have updated reviewer profiles on file. Once that's been done, and the reviewers have been notified 
and have had a chance to update their addresses with us, we contact the publishers to have them send the 
books to the reviewers.  Reviews come in all month, and each is formatted and edited (some more than others!). 
The last piece of the puzzle is posting the edited review, at which point an automated message is sent to 
the reviewer and the publisher to let them know it's been posted.  And of course all during the month, we 
have correspondence with reviewers and publishers to handle. We aspire to make the process as smooth as 
possible for everyone involved, especially the reviewers.

At present, we are receiving and posting about 20 reviews per month. In recent months, we have rewritten 
and clarified the 'how to become a reviewer' page; updated, expanded and clarified the guidelines for 
how to write a review; and have commissioned our first Review Article.

These reviews are yet another free service of LINGUIST List. The four review editors volunteer their time, 
but we could not function without the excellent work of our graduate assistant, who processes incoming reviews, 
makes sure that publishers send review copies to the right person, handles most correspondence, and does 1,001 other tasks for us.
