Description:
The Faculty of Arts and the Department of English and American Studies at
Potsdam University, Germany, invite applications for the following post,
preferably for the winter semester of 2012/13:
Professorship for Modern English Language and Linguistics (W3).
The successful candidate will have a commitment to representing the
discipline in its entirety in research and teaching. Teaching responsibilities
will be in the teacher-training and non-teacher training BA/MA-degree
programmes in the Department, as well as in the interdisciplinary MA
programmes "Fremdsprachenlinguistik" ('the Linguistics of Foreign
Languages') and "Linguistik: Kommunikation, Variation und
Mehrsprachigkeit" ('Linguistics: Communication, Variation and
Multilingualism'). It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be in
charge of the latter programme. The focus of his/her research should be on
the empirical analysis of language structures and their use in contemporary
English, alongside a proven competence in the core areas of English
linguistics (phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and
lexicology). Ideally, pragmatics and discourse analysis are additional fields
of research.
The successful candidate should be willing to connect his/her research to
one of the areas of the key research theme "Kulturelle Begegnungsräume"
('Spaces of Cultural Encounters') of the Faculty of Arts and to contribute to
its advancement. He/she will be expected to have a track record of
successful grant applications, the organisation of research projects, and
administrative service.
Applicants must meet the legal requirements for the appointment of
professors in accordance with § 39 Brandenburgisches Hochschulgesetz
(BbgHG): university degree, pedagogical qualification, special aptitude for
academic work, extensive competences in the science management as
well as additional academic credentials, such as a habilitation or equivalent
academic publications. A working knowledge of German is desirable.
The appointment will be made in accordance with § 39 BbgHG. Especially
in case of a first appointment to the position of a professor, the employment
will not be tenured, according to § 41, section 1, BbgHG. The obtention of
tenure later does not require another application procedure.
The University of Potsdam seeks to increase the proportion of women in
research and teaching, and encourages qualified female scholars to apply.
Preference will be given to disabled persons with equal qualifications.
