Job Rank: Associate Professor
Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Phonology
Description:
The Department of Linguistics at the United Arab Emirates University seeks
to fill a position in phonology/phonetics at Associate or Full Professor Rank.
The ideal candidate will have an earned PhD in linguistics and demonstrate a
record of excellence in university-level teaching and research in phonology or
phonetics-phonology interface. Applicants with interest in experimental (e.g.
speech analysis/synthesis, computational, developmental, neurolinguistic or
clinical) approaches to phonology, and those with fieldwork experience, are
particularly encouraged to apply. Expertise in Arabic phonology is desirable
but not required.
The Department of Linguistics offers undergraduate and PhD level programs
in theoretical and applied linguistics. Successful applicants are expected to
teach undergraduate courses in any area of linguistics. Faculty members are
expected to teach at all levels in the program, to share in general education
teaching, and to participate, as appropriate, in graduate teaching and
supervision.
Faculty members in the Department of Linguistics are involved in a broad
range of research projects in theoretical and applied linguistics. The
Department maintains and continues to develop state-of-the-art research
facilities housing psycholinguistic behavioral testing suites, an EEG system,
and a phonetics laboratory. In the coming year we will expand our capabilities
to fMRI and MEG imaging techniques for neurolinguistic research.
The initial appointment will be for a four-year period (renewable) with the first
two years probationary. The standard teaching load is 12 hours per semester,
modified in varying degrees by course remissions arising from funded
research and consultative activities and administrative roles. All faculty
members are expected to have an ongoing research agenda and to be
engaged in the publication of works that have been subject to external peer
review and appear in internationally recognized and cited journals or other
volumes.
This appointment will commence in September 2012 or as soon as possible
thereafter.
The UAEU offers a competitive tax-free salary commensurate with
qualifications and level of appointment. Benefits provided by the university
include housing, a furniture allowance, employer-paid comprehensive health
insurance, an education allowance for children, annual airline tickets for the
employee and family members, and an end-of-service gratuity based on
years of service.
Interested applicants should initially submit a CV with names and email
addresses of three referees along with a letter of interest describing their
teaching and research to Dr. Ali Idrissi at: ali.idrissi at uaeu.ac.ae

501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These
