Dear LINGUIST List Subscribers,

Our jaws are on the floor. We can't believe our eyes. Never in our wildest dreams
did we imagine such a response to Roger Shuy's sociolinguistics challenge. The aims
were lofty: if sociolinguists donated $1000 between noon on Monday and noon on
Wednesday, Roger Shuy would donate $500 out of his own pocket to support his subfield.

We believed sociolinguists could come up with a thousand bucks; we believed they could
pull ahead of syntax. But we underestimated the astounding fervor with which they
would apply themselves to this challenge.

Over the course of 48 hours, sociolinguists donated over $2700. TWENTY-SEVEN HUNDRED
DOLLARS. Our socks have been knocked off. Have a look:

http://linguistlist.org/fund-drive/2012/battle-of-the-fields.cfm

Obviously, this puts sociolinguistics in the lead of the Battle of the Fields, a full
thousand dollars ahead of syntax. But as we've seen in the past couple of days,
there's no limit to what a subfield can accomplish in 48 hours-- will syntax mount a
counter-challenge and reclaim their spot at the top? We can't wait to see what
happens next!

Donate now to support YOUR subfield:

Breathlessly yours,
The LINGUIST List Crew

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as
such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered
501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These
donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax
return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site,
or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match
any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your
contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the
EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a
simple administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to
LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
