Dear LINGUIST List Subscribers,
My name is Brent Woo, and I'm a student editor at the LINGUIST List. When I joined
the LINGUIST as an intern the summer after my graduation, I learned just how complex
and involved the work here is. The LINGUIST List is normally where we go to find job
postings, conference announcements, and new publications. But did you know about
these other resources available here?
* Anyone can post to the entire list a Query, which solicits from the
community participation in their online survey for research or advice on finding
publications relevant to their research topic.
* We have a database of thousands of Web Resources, which includes lists of:
- Dictionaries (https://linguistlist.org/sp/GetWRListings.cfm?WRAbbrev=Dict)
- University programs (https://linguistlist.org/teach/programs/)
- Exercises like an IPA Trainer
(https://linguistlist.org/sp/GetWRListings.cfm?WRAbbrev=Exercises)
* The Student Portal provides resources for students, answering some of the common
questions students have about linguistic careers by guiding students through
the site.
* Our projects, LL-MAP, where you can visualize and compare language distributions
on a map (See this example: http://www.llmap.org/viewer.html?maps=108530), and
MultiTree, where you can compare language family hypotheses (See this example:
http://multitree.org/trees/Tai-Kadai:%20Ethnologue%202005;Tai-Kadai:%20Dryer%202005).
The LINGUIST List has a lot of things, but it doesn't have infinite funding.
The entire operation of the List is fueled by and dependent on donations. Before
coming to work here as a graduate assistant, I didn't know that it took this many
people to run the List. I also didn't understand the urgency and necessity of
donation support. But now I do. As the linguistic community grows, the work the List
does is far more involved and important than ever, and we need your support to
continue.
We are grateful for your support and be assured that it is an investment well spent.

Thanks,
Brent Woo

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as
such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered
501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These
donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax
return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site,
or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match
any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your
contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the
EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a
simple administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to
LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if
your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
