Abstract:

C'était par un beau jour d'été de 1897. Je me trouvais à Cerisy-la-Salle chez 
Gaston Paris. Je lui exposais le projet qui m'occupait depuis quelque temps, 
celui de publier une grammaire historique de la langue française : je rêvais 
une grammaire qui donnât un aperçu historique de l'ensemble des phases 
qu'a parcourrues l'évolution de la langue depuis ses origines représentées par 
la langue parlée à l'heure actuelle.

Je lui expliquais aussi qu'en étudiant la phonétique et la morphologie, je ne 
m'arrêterais pas à la forme extérieure des mots, comme c'était la coutume 
alors, et que je remplacerais l'orthographe officielle par une transcription 
strictement phonétique partout où cela serait nécessaire pour donner une idée 
nette du résultat réel du développement linguistique. 

Je finisais mon exposé en ajoutant que j'essayerais de donner à ma 
grammaire un caractère éminemment pédagogique ; je voulais créer un 
ouvrage dans lequel les romanistes débutants pussent trouver un guide clair 
et pratique et qui, grâce à un appareil bibliographique détaille, pût aussi servir 
de base aux cours et exercices des professeurs d' Université (adapté de la 
préface)
