We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.
To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

I would like to know whether -Vna, the Theme Trigger (TT) and -(C)ana, the
Circumstantial Trigger (CT) in Malagasy voice morphology are in any way
related to pronouns in the language. I wonder about this because the
pronominal paradigm of the language seems to contain (some parts of) the -
Vna/-(C)ana forms.
Person NOM ACC
1sg. aho ahy
2sg. inaao anao
3sg/pl izy azy
1pl., incl isika antsika
1pl., excl izahay anay
2pl ianareo anareo (Keenan & Polinsky 1998: 557)
The literature I have consulted with does not identify what the TT and CT
morphemes are, but I believe it could be crucial in accounting for Malagasy
VOS order. Probably my suspicion is completely off the mark, but I have no
native speakers of Malagasy around, and my knowledge of the language is
extremely limited. I need your expertise on this matter. Any hints or
suggestions are deeply appreciated.
Thank you very much.
