Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Semantics; Syntax; Typology
Meeting Description:
Language is a system of communication in which grammatical form serves to
express meaning in context. While all languages meet the same basic
communicative needs, they each make use of different means. Syntax,
semantics and pragmatics interact in different ways across languages. This
colloquium brings together a number of renowned researchers who explore the
interaction between form, meaning, and communicative function in human
languages from different perspectives. The presentation topics range from the
definition of syntactic categories over the cognitive foundations of lexical
semantics to the impact of cultural constraints on linguistic form.
The colloquium takes place in honor of the 60th birthday of Robert D. Van Valin,
Jr. Van Valin is widely known as the principal developer of Role and Reference
Grammar (RRG), a linguistic framework that combines insights from cross-
linguistic syntactic analysis, lexical semantics, and formal pragmatics in a way
that makes it equally attractive for theoretical linguists, field linguists and
psycholinguists. Van Valin has developed, applied and refined his model of
language for more than 30 years. Last but not least, he has taught RRG
extensively all over the world.
