Description:
The Faculty of Education, Western University, seeks applicants for a
probationary (tenure-track) position at the rank of Assistant Professor
in the area of Applied Linguistics/English as a Second Language. If
qualifications and experience warrant, the appointment will be made
at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure. The selected
candidate will be assigned the role of Academic Director of the
Western Language Bridging Program. The effective date of the
appointment may be as early as July 1st, 2012.
Candidates will have completed a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics,
Second Language Education, TESL or a related field, and have a
recognized college or university TESL/TESOL diploma/ certificate or
the equivalent. The successful candidate will be assigned the role of
Academic Director of the Western Language Bridging Program.
He/She will also be expected to have an active scholarly research
program, teach at the pre-service and graduate levels, supervise
graduate students and engage in service on faculty and university
committees. Strong preference will be given to those candidates who
have demonstrated excellence in teaching content-based ESL to
university students. The successful candidate will bring experience
as both an educator and administrator of ESL and TESL programs as
well as experience in online education in a higher education setting.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Providing academic oversight to the Western Language Bridging
Program
- Working proactively to recruit instructors and students for the
program
- Teaching graduate courses in the area of applied linguistics/TESL
- Supervising graduate students
- Demonstrating a strong research and publication program and a
commitment to seeking external funding
Additional Required Qualifications:
- University level ESL teaching experience
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- High level of cultural/ intercultural competence and demonstrated
leadership administering ESL programs
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the administration and delivery of ESL programs
- Experience teaching in TESL programs at the certificate/diploma
and/or graduate level
- Experience administering TESL/TESOL programs
- A successful external research funding record
