Meeting Description:

The international conference 'Genre Variations/Standardization and Popularization: Natural Sciences, Law and Commerce' will take place at the University of Palermo, Italy, 25-27 October 2012.
  
General Information: 

An international conference organized within the framework of the PRIN 2008 Project 'The Popularization of Scientific Discourse in a Diachronic Perspective', partly funded by the Ministry of Education, University and Scientific Research, will be hosted by the Palermo Unit, Dipartimento DIPLI,  Palazzo Chiaramonte Steri, 25-27 October 2012.

Main Objective of the Conference: 

The main objective of the conference is to provide a platform for sharing views on the subject of generic variation and/or standardization in texts disseminating scientific knowledge in the domains of natural sciences, law and commerce. 

For the plenary lectures the following keynote speakers have accepted our invitation:

Vijay Bhatia (City University of Hong Kong)
Peter Kastberg (Aarhus University)
Gunther Kress (Institute of Education, University of London) 

Call for Papers:

Contributions are invited on the theme of the generic aspects in the popularization of scientific discourse in the following issues:

- Standard genres in scientific academic discourse
- Popularization of scientific discourse and the media
- Popularization of legal discourse
- Genres and the popularization of natural sciences 
- Genre hybridization 
- Genre variability
- Genres and the web
- Knowledge mediators (i.e. translators, science journalists, etc.)
- Gender and/or ethnicity, genre and popularization
- Intercultural transfer/crossover and popularization
- Multimodality and popularization
- Lexical and lexicographical variation
- Genre popularization and secondary culture transfer
- Pedagogic approaches to popularization (e.g.CLIL)

Submissions should be directed to clavicula at libero.it and silvana.sciarrino at unipa.it by 20 May. Abstracts, of no more than 300 words outlining the main thrust and conclusions of the paper and clearly specifying the domain and the topic, should be in word format and should indicate the author's full name, affiliation, address, phone and fax number and email address.  

Notification of acceptance will be given by 20 May.
