Description:

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) 
is seeking a faculty research assistant (FRA) to join in linguistic research in 
Persian (Farsi and/or Dari). The projects will support CASL's mission to 
conduct state-of-the-art research in areas that result in improved performance 
on language tasks relevant to the work of government language 
professionals. The FRA's initial assignment will be to provide research and 
administrative support to projects with a Persian (Farsi and/or Dari) language 
focus and/or components.

Duties: 
Responsibilities include literature reviews, linguistic analysis, contributing to 
descriptions of Persian dialectology, morphology, pronunciation and fieldwork 
with native speakers. The FRA will also assist the project with administrative 
duties, such as helping to prepare progress reports, schedule meetings, and 
take minutes during meetings. 

Qualifications:  
Bachelor's degree required. Knowledge of spoken and written Persian is 
necessary. Candidates must have self-motivation, a demonstrated work 
ethic, and an ability and willingness to learn to work with quantitative research 
methods, corpus linguistics, and computer applications for linguistic 
research. The successful candidate will work as a member of a larger team 
and be motivated to receive training as needed. Familiarity with government 
and defense-related foreign language activities will be a plus. Experience with 
phonetic software such as PRAAT, Linux and any scripting language is a 
plus.

Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be willing to obtain the appropriate 
security clearance. 

CASL, established in 2003, is one of 14 university-affiliated research centers 
in the nation. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science research that 
results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the work of 
government language professionals. Our research focuses on improving 
knowledge of less commonly taught languages, enhancing the acquisition 
and maintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals, 
advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in government 
professions, and improving the quality of human language technology.

Compensation for this position is competitive commensurate with experience 
and education, plus fantastic benefits (e.g., healthcare, excellent retirement 
plans, 22 days for annual leave, 3 personal days, and 14 scheduled holiday 
leave days per University schedule).
