at the University of Munich:
PhD Fellowships

The University of Munich (LMU) is repositioning and
expanding its activities in computational linguistics and
natural language processing (NLP). As part of this effort,
Prof. Dr. Hinrich Schuetze has been appointed Chair of
Computational Linguistics and head of the Center for
Information and Language Processing (CIS). The institute
will focus on linguistically informed statistical NLP while
building on CIS's rich tradition in information extraction
and retrieval.

The University of Munich is one of the top research
universities in Europe. It was the highest ranked
institution on several measures in the Exzellenzinitiative
funding program organized by the German national science
foundation in 2012.

Munich and the Upper Bavaria area are among the regions in
Europe with the highest quality of living. The area is also
home to a large number of high-tech, services and
manufacturing companies, including many that use NLP
technology.

The CIS team has the following openings. Salaries are in
the range 30000-50000 euros and depend on the type of

4 doctoral fellowships. These fellowships are funded from
a variety of sources, including German national science
foundation (DFG), university funds and industry grants. The
research will be carried out in the general area of
linguistically informed statistical NLP with specialization
in one of four focus areas: sentiment analysis, information
extraction, machine translation and semi-supervised learning
for NLP.
