Meeting Description:

The 7th International Symposium on the Acquisition of Second Language Speech (New Sounds 2013) will take place on May 17-19, 2013, at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.

New Sounds gathers researchers from all over the world to discuss issues related to the teaching and learning of second/foreign language (L2) phonetics, phonology, and pronunciation. The conference will cover a variety of themes related to the acquisition of L2 phonetics, phonology, and pronunciation including:

- Speech perception and production
- Theories of L2 phonological learning
- Phonetics and phonology in SLA
- Acquisition of L2 phonology and phonotactics
- Multilingualism and the acquisition of post-L2 phonology
- The application of new technologies to pronunciation teaching and learning
- Sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic, and neurolinguistic aspects of L2 phonological learning

Keynote Speakers:

1. John Archibald - University of Victoria, Canada
2. Debra Hardison - Michigan State University, USA
3. Murray Munro - Simon Fraser University, Canada 

Call for Papers:

Proposals for papers and posters related to the acquisition of second language speech are invited. Paper presentations will be 20 minutes each, followed by a 5-10-minute question-and-answer period. Posters will be presented on May 17 (Friday) and May 18 (Saturday).

Abstracts should not exceed 300 words (excluding references) and must be submitted by December 1, 2012 in Word format only (e.g.  .doc, .docx). 

Authors may submit one singly- authored and one jointly-authored paper abstract, or two jointly-authored paper abstracts, which will be peer-reviewed anonymously. To ensure anonymity, abstracts should not contain excessive references to its author's publications or acknowledgements for grants or to granting agencies. Each abstract should contain:

(a) a title,
(b) a statement of the relevant research context and key references,
(c) a clear and explicit statement of the question/s or issue to be examined,
(d) a clear statement of the methodology adopted (if applicable) and results, and
(e) a summary of the conclusions reached and an assessment of their significance.
