Genres of Sharing
Panel organized within the 13th International Pragmatics Conference, to be held in New Delhi, India, 8-13 September 2013

Sharing is one of the key features in new media spaces, considering the variety of media affordances for different forms of sharing activities offered (and requested) by web boards or social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter or Flickr (cf. Thurlow/Jaworski 2011). However, sharing activities are not restricted to the new media, they occur also in several offline settings like e.g. at family dinners (Aronsson 2011), in tv shows (Wee 2011), in workplace meetings (Holmes 2005) or in AA self-help groups (Arminen 2004). Wee (2011) suggests that sharing has become a culturally salient activity, framing and constraining people's ways of interaction.

In research on narratives, sharing narratives and sharing experiences has often been mentioned as a crucial point in understanding cultural cohesion and community building processes (e.g. Georgakopoulou 2005), but there is still a lack of empirical and theoretical densification of the phenomenon on its own. Therefore, the panel will explore the pragmatics of sharing by means of a further investigation of its performative and medial aspects in various genre settings.

The aim of this panel is twofold. Firstly, it aims to provide an overview of genres where sharing is (made) relevant. Secondly, by analyzing sharing in different genre settings, the panel aims to discuss theoretical conceptualizations of sharing as a communicative mode, a conversational type, an activity type or as social action in a broader sense. The panel is designed to bring together an international array of scholars working in various research paradigms in the field of genre and discourse analysis, all concerned with various genres in on- and offline settings. 

Call for Papers:

The panel welcomes contributions exploring the ubiquitous phenomenon of sharing from a variety of approaches including - but not limited to - ethnomethodology, sociology, cultural studies, conversation analysis, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis.

Abstracts (no more than 500 words) should be submitted to the panel convenor (susanne.tienken at tyska.su.se) as email attachments by October 25. After obtaining the acceptance, the prospective contributors will have to submit the abstracts individually at the conference website http://ipra.ua.ac.be/main.aspx?c=.CONFERENCE13 by November 1.
