Meeting Description:

ICAME 34
Santiago de Compostela, 22-26 May 2013
English Corpus Linguistics on the Move: Applications and Implications

The research groups Variation, Linguistic Change and Grammaticalization and Spertus from the Department of English and German at the University of Santiago de Compostela are organizing the 34th ICAME conference in Santiago de Compostela from 22-26 May 2013.

ICAME is an international organization of linguists and information scientists working with English machine-readable texts. The aim of the organization is to collect and distribute information on English language material available for computer processing and on linguistic research completed or in progress on the material, to compile an archive of English text corpora in machine-readable form, and to make material available to research institutions.

Academic Programme:

The programme will consist of full papers, work-in-progress reports, poster sessions, software demonstrations, as well as pre-conference workshops. The following speakers have agreed to give plenary lectures:

Jenny Cheshire (Queen Mary, University of London)
Holger Diessel (Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena)
Marianne Hundt (University of Zurich)
Ken Hyland (The University of Hong Kong)

Conference Venue:

The conference hotel and main venue is NH Obradoiro, a 5-star hotel located 10 minutes from the old town. Plenary lectures will be held at the Faculty of Philology, situated just across the road from the hotel, in the North Campus of the University of Santiago de Compostela. Registration and information on accommodation and conference costs will appear in the second circular and on our website in late January 2013.

Social Programme:

There will be an opening reception on Wednesday, and a half-day excursion including a boat trip on the Rias Baixas and a visit to the Condes de Albarei winery on Friday. The gala dinner on Saturday night will take place at the conference hotel. The post-conference city tour will give the delegates the opportunity to discover the beauty of Santiago, a UNESCO World Heritage City.

Call for Papers:

Full papers will be allowed 30 minutes, including 10 minutes for discussion; work-in-progress reports will be 15 minutes long, including 5 minutes for discussion; and software demonstrations will be allowed 30 minutes, including 10 minutes for discussion. Posters (max. size A0, portrait format) will be presented in a special session and remain on display during the conference. Proposals for pre-conference workshops are welcome.

Abstracts should be between 400 and 500 words (exclusive of references) and should state research questions, approach, method, data and (expected) results. Authors may submit a maximum of two abstracts if at least one of these is co-authored. Please indicate in the first line of your abstract whether your contribution is a full paper, a work-in-progress report, a poster or a software demonstration. The deadline for submissions (via the website) is 5 December 2012. Please refer to the conference homepage for details. Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by the end of January 2013 with the second circular. Registration will open in mid-February 2013.

Early career ICAMErs should note that they may apply to be considered for the John Sinclair Bursary for delivering the best paper. Similarly, there will be a Stig Johansson Bursary for the best poster presentation. More information on how to enter will appear in the second circular.
