Meeting Description:
The Dene (Athabaskan) Languages Conference is the annual meeting of researchers, teachers and activists interested in the languages of the Na-Dene language family and the cultures of the people that speak them.
The theme of this year’s conference ‘Dene Drum and Discourse’, expresses the idea that language is intimately connected with the social and cultural setting in which it is used. In many Dene communities, drumming represents a practice in which language, culture, and social interaction come together. It is here that the sharing of language and culture between generations has often been most successful. The conference will feature performances by drum groups who come from all over the territory where Na-Dene languages are spoken. As well as reflecting the Dene culture of drumming, the conference welcomes contributions on language maintenance and revitalization, and linguistic studies on the Na-Dene languages.
Call for Papers:
We invite contributions from Elders, youth and other community members, teachers, speakers and learners, linguists and other academics on language revitalization and maintenance, language and culture and linguistic description. Each day of the conference will focus on a different aspect of the conference theme:
June 12: ‘Language Maintenance and Revitalization’ - reports by community members, teachers, linguists, activists
June 13: ‘Drum’ - the drum and drumming in its different Dene manifestations, connection to language (e.g., groupings within the Na-Dene family), connection to language/culture maintenance and revitalization, language and culture
June 14: ‘Discourse’ - language and linguistic studies, from sounds to the transmission of meaning, with a focus on language in context and meaning in language
We invite presentations on all three days. Time slots for presentations will be 20-30 minutes, plus 10 minutes discussion. Please submit your abstract to:
