 DGfS-CL/EXCITEMENT Fall School 2013

Host Institution: Universität Heidelberg
Coordinating Institution: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sprachwissenschaft

Dates: 02-Sep-2013 - 13-Sep-2013
Location: Heidelberg, Germany

Focus: The Fall School presents innovative and emerging fields in computational
linguistics which are not traditionally taught in standard degree programmes.
Minimum Education Level: Undergraduate

Description:
The CL Fall School is a biennial event for bachelor-level and master-level
students in computational linguistics, computer science, and neighboring areas
of linguistics who wish to broaden their knowledge of techniques and methods
used in natural language processing. We are offering four courses in various
areas of computational linguistics. Along with the theoretical knowledge
transfer, the courses also consist of lab sessions in which the participants
can develop and experiment with concrete applications. All lectures are given
in English.

Course(s) Offered:

Distributional Semantics
The goal of this course is to present the state of the art in
distributional semantics as a framework to explore semantic
representations for linguistic, NLP, and cognitive research.
Students will learn how to build and experiment with DSMs, testing
their potentialities, their parameters, as well as their current
    limits.

Intelligent CALL and Learner Corpora
Intelligent Computer-Assisted Language Learning (ICALL) is a
relatively young field of interdisciplinary research exploring the
integration of natural language processing in foreign language
teaching and second language acquisition research. The course will
introduce both the theoretical issues and the practical system
development aspects of ICALL and provide the student with a firm
basis for understanding the current research issues.

Textual Entailment
The goal of this course is to give participants a detailed knowledge
of the state-of-the-art theories and concepts in textual entailment
recognition. This includes the typology of the major algorithmic
approaches, relevant linguistic phenomena, applying textual
entailment to NLP applications, and acquiring inference knowledge
    from various sources.

Linguistic Annotation
During the course the students will learn about the different
preprocessing steps involved in the creation of a linguistically
annotated corpus and will get to know (and use) different tools for
manual and automatic annotation. We will talk about the merits of
standardisation and interoperability for linguistic corpora and have
a look at some important standards. The students will learn to
compute inter-annotator agreement for human annotators and to
    evaluate automatically predicted annotations.
