Workshop Description:
The goal of this workshop is to explore multimodal communication in oral
video corpora from complementary perspectives. Through the analysis of
examples, the speakers will demonstrate how they examine the way people
draw on diverse modalities to create meaning in interaction, with a
particular focus on the integration of speech (verbal and vocal aspects)
and communicative bodily action (facial expressions, posture, and gesture).
The challenge is to untangle the complexity of multimodal analysis and the
variety of forms it involves. We hope this workshop will provide a forum
for discussion of the problems that multimodality researchers encounter, as
well as facilitate exchange on the methods they use to account for the
inter-subjective construction of meaning during face-to-face communication.
