Meeting Description:

The first NP workshop (NP1) was held in Vigo on 2-3 October 2009, supported by the English Linguistics Circle of Santiago de Compostela and Vigo coordinated by Teresa Fanego. It was followed by NP2, organized in Newcastle on 15-16 September 2011. Following the success of NP1 and NP2 we are pleased to announce the 3rd Vigo-Newcastle-Santiago-Leuven International Workshop on ‘The Structure of the Noun Phrase in English - Synchronic and Diachronic Explorations’ (NP3), to be held at the University of Leuven on 14 and 15 November 2013.

Call for Papers:

This workshop aims to bring together linguists investigating aspects of the English noun phrase from various points of view (theoretical, descriptive; structural, functional, textual; synchronic, diachronic, contrastive). We invite presentations dealing with any topics or issues in need of elucidation, including the following: 

- (Functional-)structural relations in the NP (e.g. do the traditional concepts of modification and complementation  suffice?) 
- Implications of particular theoretical frameworks for NP structure - or of NP phenomena for theoretical frameworks
- Parallels between the functional structures of NP and VP 
- Constructional (non-) compositionality and collocational relations
- NP types, including binominal NPs, appositive NPs, possessive NPs 
- Elements of structure and categories of the NP (e.g. the controversial status of determiners)
- Relation between NP-internal structure and clausal and textual functions of NPs 
- Prosody and NP structure
- Nominalization 
- Grammaticalization, lexicalization and (inter-)subjectification in the NP
- Synchronic or diachronic studies contrasting the English NP with other languages 

Abstracts must be submitted in MS Word or RTF format as an e-mail attachment to Tine Breban (tine.breban at manchester.ac.uk) by 15 June 2013. The email should use the subject header ‘NP3 abstract 2013’. Abstracts should be no more than 500 words excluding references. The page should be headed only by the title of the paper and not mention the presenter(s) nor their affiliations or addresses. The accompanying email should include: 

(a) Title of the paper 
(b) Name(s) of the author(s) 
(c) Institutional affiliation(s) 
(d) Email address(es) 

Notification of acceptance will be sent out by 15 July 2013.
