Dear British Native Speakers,

I need this questionnaire be filled by British educated native speakers for my
PhD project. As I have explained, there are 8 situations. In each situation
there is a request which is somehow impolite. The participants should first
rate the degree of impoliteness of these requests, from 1 which is ''not at
all impolite'' to 5 which is ''extremely impolite. They can also choose any
number on this continuum (from 1 to 5 based on their perception of the
impoliteness). Then they need to write what their probable responses would be
to these requests. I emphasize that they don't have to make another request.
They need to imagine themselves in place of those people receiving the request
and write their responses. By the way I need 60 participants who should be
educated. Any number of people, however, will be a help.

Dear Participant: Below you can see 8 situations in each of which a statement
for request is made. Please read each statement and decide how impolite it is
by circling the appropriate number. Then write what your response would be.

1. You are working on an assignment. You know that your close friend has a
book which is quite helpful for this assignment. You decide to ask your friend
to lend you the book.

“I hate to impose, but I wonder whether I could borrow your book for a while.”
