Description:

Second Call: Ph.D. Scholarship in Neurocognition of Language

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. student, to be supervised by Dr. Phaedra Royle and co-supervised by Dr. Karsten Steinhauer, wishing to work on a SSHRC-funded project entitled Re-evaluating the Temporal Dynamics of Syntactic Online Processing: Towards an Ecologically Valid Model. A two year Ph.D. stipend $23 000 (including medical insurance), with a possibility of renewal, will be offered to the student. The start date will be September 2013 or January 2014. Applications will be taken until the position is filled.

The student will explore the domain of language processing using ERP methods, in written and spoken French. In addition to being responsible for a specific aspect of the project (phrase-structure violations in French), the student will be encouraged to develop his or her own lines of investigation. The candidate should have a Master’s degree in linguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics or cognitive sciences, and is expected to develop theoretical and empirical skills in these domains during his or her Ph.D, if needed. Research experience in psycholinguistics, neuroimaging, statistical analyses, basic programming and especially ERP techniques, in addition to multilingualism will be considered assets. The student will be integrated into Dr. Phaedra Royle’s research team at the School of Speech-language Pathology and Audiology of the Université de Montréal, as well as the Centre for Research on Brain, Language and Music, and will be registered in the Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program of the Université de Montréal.

To apply, the candidate should send a C.V., their most recent transcript, a personal statement outlining strengths and accomplishments, as well as two examples of original scientific writing (e.g., first author paper, conference proceedings, Master’s Thesis, etc) to Dr. Phaedra Royle at phaedra.royle at umontreal.ca.

The Université de Montréal is a French institution. Students who must perfect their French skills can benefit from temporary accommodations during their first years of study.

Application Deadline: 02-Jan-2014
