Meeting Description:
SL2Hub-DC is an interdisciplinary, student led conference on Sign Language hosted by Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. The official language of the conference is ASL.
This conference has a bit of traditional and a bit of unique. Half of the conference will follow the traditional format with student researchers presenting about their own data. Students giving presentations will describe their methods of analysis, preliminary findings, and the significance for their fields of study. There will also be a poster session where additional students can showcase their research.
The other half of the conference will take a less formal tone, focusing on the student learning process. Workshops and these presentations will focus on one data set. Because everyone can become familiar with the data prior to the conference, more in-depth conversations about the process and findings can take place during the weekend. This conference's data set is Wayne Betts Jr.'s Ted Talk, 'Deaf Lens' available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocbyS9-3jjM.
Students giving presentations about the shared data set will also describe their methods of analysis, preliminary findings, and the significance for their fields of study. Students leading workshops will present challenges faced by their discipline in analyzing ASL data and facilitate discussions amongst students for us all to grow in our studies together. Wayne Betts Jr. will also attend the conference and looks forward to the discussions.
