Description:

The project Special Indefinites in Discourse, which is funded by the German Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and hosted by University of Cologne (PI: Prof. Dr. Klaus von Heusinger), offers a doctoral student  position at the level of Salary Scale 13 TV-L / 65% to start by 1. April 2014 (or as soon as possible thereafter) for a period of three years.

The project aims to investigate the role of indefinite noun phrases (or short “indefinites”) in structuring a discourse.  Indefinites contribute to different semantic and pragmatic levels: (i) they make an existential contribution to the truth condition of a sentence, (ii) they introduce discourse referents as potential antecedents for subsequent anaphoric terms, and (iii) they furnish discourse referents with a “Discourse Structuring Potential”, i.e. they give information about the referential structure of the upcoming discourse, e.g. at what point in the discourse and how the entity associated with the discourse referent is going to be re-mentioned. The goals of the project are twofold. First, it aims to investigate the three aforementioned semantic-pragmatic levels from an empirical and theoretical point of view. Second, it aims to extend existing semantic theories through an account of the Discourse Structuring Potential. 

The candidate is expected to conduct a PhD level research within the bounds of the project, culminating in a doctoral dissertation of high academic quality. The candidate must have a background in linguistics and/or a related discipline and a genuine interest in the topic of the project. The following qualifications are preferred but not required for the post:
− native knowledge of Turkish;
− knowledge of German;
− Master's degree in linguistics or a related discipline;
− knowledge of and/or experience in corpus linguistics or psycholinguistic experimental techniques.

The research group at the University of Cologne, Department of German Language and Literature provides a professional infrastructure and an appropriate workplace for conducting research. The doctoral student is expected to live in Germany during the doctoral period, and the post may include research visits to Istanbul for conducting psycholinguistic experiments.
