Meeting Description:

We are delighted to invite you to the first Conference on Academic Writing in Eastern Europe (AWEAST), organised by the Centre for Academic and Professional Writing at the Faculty of Letters, History and Theology of the West University, Timișoara, Romania. The conference will take place on April 3-6, 2014 and will mark the official opening of the writing centre, established as a result of the LIDHUM project (Literacy Development in the Humanities), a SCOPES institutional partnership between Switzerland, Macedonia, Romania and Ukraine.

The conference is open to all those who are interested in writing provision at universities in Eastern Europe: academics, researchers, as well as BA, MA and doctoral students. By 'Eastern Europe' we mean all countries in the former communist area, which includes Central Europe, North Eastern, South Eastern Europe and Russia. Though geographically not homogenous, these countries share some commonalities in the transformation of higher education which occurs at a different pace and with different challenges than in the Western European countries.

The conference will also initiate discussions towards creating an academic writing network in Romania and/or Eastern Europe, and will attempt to identify potential future strategies for writing development and models for cross-national cooperation. The languages of the conference will be English and Romanian.

Call for Papers:

We invite submissions for 20-minute paper presentations addressing (but not limited to) the following:

- Writing provision offered at universities in Eastern Europe
- Institutional support for writing development: Writing support available to teachers, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and researchers
- Connections of writing to research-oriented teaching and disciplinary learning
- Writing in academic contexts with personal, creative or literary genres
- The specific challenges of establishing academic writing support in Eastern Europe, and ways in which they can be overcome
- The relation between writing in L1 (Eastern European languages) and writing in English or other foreign languages
- Effects of transition and internationalization on writing practices, writing genres and writing support
- Writing research in Eastern Europe: Using writing research to develop good teaching practices

Both research-oriented papers and practice reports are welcome. The languages of the conference will be English and Romanian, with paper presentations in either of the two languages, and plenary lectures held in English. Please note that, while we will make every effort to facilitate the exchange of ideas during the conference, we will be unable to provide the translation of plenaries and paper presentations. 

250-word abstracts, mentioning the institutional affiliation and contact details of the presenter, should be sent to csap at uvt.ro by January 20. Abstracts should include the title of the paper, up to 5 keywords, and clearly state the main points of the contribution and its relevance to the field. Participants will be notified of acceptance by February 15.
