Description:
The research fellow will contribute to the achievement of the School of Education’s research strategy by undertaking specified research activities within the research project, “Translation and translanguaging: Investigating linguistic and cultural transformations in superdiverse wards in four UK cities.” This project is funded by AHRC under the Translating Cultures theme. The aim of the project is to understand how people communicate across diverse languages and cultures. In addition, linguistic practices will be investigated in public, private, and digital settings. The researcher will contribute to data analysis and outputs.
The post holder will be a key member of a research team in Birmingham and a larger, national and international research team across Britain and Europe. The appointee will need to liaise and consult regularly with the project director and other members of the research team. The appointee will also need to develop and maintain strong working relationships with key staff at partner research organisations where the research is being conducted. The appointee will have a background in applied linguistics, linguistic anthropology and/or social sciences, and will have some knowledge of applied linguistic and social science research methods. Ideally, s/he will have an interest in collaborative and participatory research. The post holder will also be fluent in spoken English and at least one variety of Chinese, preferably including one or both of Cantonese and Mandarin. S/he will also be biliterate in English and Chinese. A very good knowledge of Chinese communities in the UK will be an important asset
