11th International Conference of Greek Linguistics
Rhodes: September 26-29, 2013
Workshop: Language Contact in the Light of Modern Greek Morphological Variation
Workshop Convener: Laboratory of Modern Greek Dialects (University of Patras)
The role of language contact in linguistic change has been a hotly debated issue in linguistic research (see, among others, Weinreich 1953, Thomason 2001, Heine & Kuteva 2005, Thomason & Kaufman 2008, Matras 2009, Hickey 2010). Several proposals have been put forward in order to determine different kinds of effects on typologically different recipient systems, and borrowability scales have been proposed on the basis of the type of borrowing (lexical and/or structural) and the intensity of language contact. With respect to Modern Greek dialects, a variety of contact phenomena has been triggered by both language-internal and language-external factors (cf. Janse 2001, Melissaropoulou 2009, Ralli 2012, to appear).
This workshop seeks to bring together researchers working on morphology, language contact and Modern Greek dialectal variation. Emphasis will be given on contact phenomena with Turkish and Romance. Issues to be tackled in this workshop include, but are not confined to: (i) lexical vs. structural borrowing, (ii) adaptation strategies, (iii) the convergence of morphological systems and (iv) limits of and constraints on contact induced change.
