Description:

PhD position at Institut Jean-Nicod (CNRS, Paris)

The LINGUAE group of Institut Jean-Nicod (CNRS, Paris) expects to offer a
position in sign language linguistics or psycholinguistics at the PhD level in
Spring or Fall 2013 (the starting date is flexible).

The PhD position is for 3 years for work advised by one or several members of
our group, contingent upon satisfactory scientific and organizational
achievements after the first year.

The following are expected of the applicant:

(i) s/he should provide evidence of strong abilities/achievements in either
(a) formal methods and theoretical linguistics (especially syntax and
semantics/pragmatics), or (b) experimental methods and psycholinguistics;

(ii) s/he should have strong knowledge of at least one sign language, and
should have studied or conducted research on sign language linguistics or
psycholinguistics;

(iii) s/he should be willing to learn some LSF quickly and to conduct
fieldwork and/or experimental work on LSF, as well take an active role in the
interaction with the Deaf community in Paris;

(iv) s/he should be willing to take an active part in developing
multidisciplinary research within a group with a strong formal and
experimental component, and broad interests in linguistics and cognitive
science. (Institut Jean-Nicod is a member of the Institut d'Etude de la
Cognition at École Normale Supérieure, which also includes dynamic groups in
psycholinguistics and psychology (LSCP) and various fields cognitive science
and neuroscience).

Details about the PhD position: Funding will cover student fees and a one-year
fellowship (approximately 1,500 €/month). Internal or external funding for the
following years is contingent upon satisfactory completion of the tasks and
submission of an acceptable 1st year progress report. Applicants should have
appropriate undergraduate degree qualifications (MA degree in theoretical
linguistics or psychology is preferable). The student will be based in the
LINGUAE group of Institut Jean-Nicod, but will be enrolled in a Paris
university at the PhD level, for work advised by one or several members of our
group. As partial fulfillment of the Ph.D. requirements, the successful
applicant will attend courses and seminars offered within a linguistics and/or
cognitive science program. Small organizational and/or teaching
responsibilities are also required.
