Location: Canberra, ACT, Australia
Contact Person: Christian Döhler
Meeting Email: christian.doehler at anu.edu.au

Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics

Call Deadline: 20-Feb-2013

Meeting Description:

The workshop on the Languages of Melanesia is organised by the department of Linguistics at the Australian National University (School of Culture, History and Language) and will be held at the Kioloa Coastal Campus on the New South Wales coast.

Keynote Speakers:

Ger Reesink (Radboud University & MPI, Nijmegen)
Glenn Summerhayes (University of Otago, Dunedin)

Melanesia is the most linguistically diverse part of the world with more than 1200 languages spoken on the island of New Guinea alone (Foley 2000). Despite this diversity, it makes sense to isolate Melanesia as a unit for analysis owing to the many cross-cutting directions of influence between the languages of the region. For this reason we welcome papers both on the various Papuan languages, and on Austronesian languages of the Melanesian region.

Although studies on languages spoken in Melanesia have been on the increase, the linguistic area remains under-described. Following on the four previous workshops on Papuan/Melanesian languages organised at the University of Sydney (2006 & 2008) and at ANU (2010 & 2012), this workshop aims at gathering scholars from various generations to foster a sense of community. It will be informal, focusing on daring and exploratory work rather than published outcomes.

The workshop will include a special session on Trans-New Guinea languages and on the languages of Southern New Guinea as well as keynote on archaeological issues by Glenn Summerhayes.

During the weekend, presentations and discussions will alternate with chances to swim in the Pacific and go on bushwalks in the surrounding rainforest.

Costs will be kept to a minimum (there is no conference fee) and transport will be arranged from Canberra on 24 May and back to Canberra on the afternoon of 26 May.

Call for Papers:

Prospective participants are invited to submit abstracts related to any aspect of the languages spoken in Melanesia. Talks will be from 20 to 40 minutes long (please specify in the abstract) followed by 10 minutes of discussion. Abstracts should not be longer than 300 words including examples and bibliography. Please submit your abstracts before the 20 February 2013 to Christian Döhler (christian.doehler[at]anu.edu.au).

You may include any topic pertaining to Melanesian languages, including (but no restricted to):

- Synchronic description of particular languages
- Sociolinguistics
- Diachronic perspectives and language reconstruction
- (Pre-)history of the Sahul continent
- Areal linguistics
- Language typology
- Interactions between Papuan and Austronesian languages
- Methodology of fieldwork
- Language endangerment and revitalization
- Language and education
