SECOL LXXX (80) will be held at USC Upstate’s George Dean Johnson Campus in downtown Spartanburg, SC, Thursday through Saturday, April 4-6, 2013. 

Confirmed plenary speakers include:

Christine Mallinson (U Maryland-Baltimore County): Language Variation in U.S. Schools
Ralf Thiede (U North Carolina-Charlotte): Teaching Undergraduate Linguistics
Tracey Weldon (U South Carolina): Redefining the Authentic AAE Speaker

This year’s conference will feature dual themes: 

Teaching Undergraduate Language Teaching
African American English in Education and Society

The conference will be held at the George Dean Johnson campus of USC Upstate, approximately 20 minutes from the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport (GSP).

2nd Call for Papers:

Extended call deadline: January 20, 2013

We are looking forward to an exciting conference in Spartanburg, SC April 4-6. We have already received many outstanding abstracts and the review committee is starting their work already, but we would like to extend the deadline - particularly in light of our interest in graduate and undergraduate student participation.

Guidelines for Submissions: 

Submissions should be <300 words. 
No personal information should be included in the abstract. 

SECOL is a regional conference that regularly welcomes both domestic and international scholars as well as graduate and even undergraduate students who have valuable insights to share. We are well-known for our broad interests within the fields of language and linguistics and have a history of focus on regional language of the South. 

While submissions relating to the conference themes are especially solicited, research findings in all areas of language and linguistics are welcome. We also welcome thoughtful contributions from graduate and undergraduate students - the later particularly when under the advisement of a faculty mentor. Panels of graduate and undergraduate students together with their teachers reflecting on various pedagogical techniques are also solicited. 

The focus on Undergraduate Linguistics will include but not be limited to the following: 

- Celebrating the advantages and overcoming the challenges of being a linguist attached to a department of specialists in another field (e.g. English, Languages, etc.) 
- Design and development of courses, majors, minors, etc. 
- Design and development of projects, fieldwork experiences, etc. 
- Choice and use of resources and media (electronic & otherwise) 
- Dealing with administrative change of command 
- Recruitment of students and sustainability 
- Use of specific methodologies of teaching, engagement, etc. 

Proposals for Individual papers (30 minutes) and for Panels or Sessions with colleagues or students (60 or 90 minutes) are requested. For organized sessions, an abstract must be submitted for each participant (please be sure the title is identical for all submissions). Questions about the venue and arrangements may be addressed to local host David Marlow (dwmarlow at uscupstate.edu). 

Attach your abstract as an anonymous Microsoft Word document (-.doc), Adobe (-.pdf), or Text (-.txt) document. If your abstract includes tables, figures, diagrams, or special characters or fonts, please use PDF. Do not include your name on the abstract. 

Electronic submissions are strongly preferred. Hard-copy submissions will be considered. If submitting hard copy, provide three (3) copies of the abstract and one (1) copy of the contact information to:

We expect to be able to supply laptops and projectors for all session rooms. Presenters should bring any special equipment required. 

Note: 

This year, regular conference registration will confer SECOL membership - which includes subscription to the Southern Journal of Linguistics (SJL). An anonymous donor has paid membership dues for all Graduate Students. Lifetime members will pay a reduced registration. 

Withdrawal from the Program: 

SECOL strongly discourages substitute presenters as this adversely affects all presentations. The above guidelines are written to provide sufficient flexibility so that even if your ideas change as you write the paper or if your experimental results are not as expected, your paper will be adequately reflected by the abstract. If, however, you cannot in good conscience read your paper within the framework of the abstract as accepted by the Program Committee, you may withdraw the paper prior to the meeting. To withdraw from the program, please contact local host David Marlow (dwmarlow at uscupstate.edu). 

All authors must register and pay for the conference by a date to be specified in the acceptance letter to retain their place on the program.
