International Conference on Audiovisual Translation

An urge for the study and theorizing of audiovisual translation has been brought about by the contemporary social processes of globalization and expanding intercultural communication, as well as rapid technological developments. Ukraine, traditionally a dubbing country, has a very developed practice of film translation, but has only started building its theoretical foundation. Furthermore, being de facto a bilingual country, in recent years film translation has become a political and legal battlefield between the proponents of Ukrainian and Russian. Sometimes the debates have referred vaguely to the existing practices of other multilingual countries, but the theoretical vacuum has not been conducive to informed policy-making. All of this requires scholarly exploration and discussion of film translation as a process, product and concept. 

The conference ‘Translation and Cinema: Multiplicity of Perspectives, Points of Contact,’ sponsored by the European Society for Translation Studies, will be the first dedicated solely to audiovisual translation held in Ukraine and its ambition is to attract translation scholars’ attention to this field. It also hopes to open up Translation Studies in Ukraine to a wider dialogue with the international translation studies community and other disciplines. We are inviting translation scholars, researchers with interest in audiovisual translation, Media and Film Studies, practicing translators, film industry professionals and amateurs.

Call for Papers:

The conference will provide a platform for the discussion of (but will not be restricted by) the following issues:   

- Audiovisual translation on the intersection of theory and practice 
- Film translation as subject of research in multiple disciplines (theory, history, methods)
- Multiple modalities of audiovisual translation 
- Film translation as activism vs. commercial practice 
- Film translation and manipulation (ideology, language policy, political or social change) 
- Status of film translation in Ukraine, post-Soviet countries and Western Europe 
- Audiovisual translation as career and academic discipline 
- Translation as the post-production in film industry: professional practices, quality assurance, working conditions, technology, legal aspects 

The conference will include plenary lectures, specialized panels, and presentations of subtitled/dubbed projects. Speakers are advised to limit their papers to 20 minutes (followed by a 10-minute discussion). The two official languages of the conference are English and Ukrainian.   

Applicants interested in participating are kindly asked to send their 250-300-words proposals for papers (or for screening of their AVT projects) to translcinema at gmail.com as a Word document by 30 September 2013. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by 20 December 2013. Applicants whose papers are accepted will have to confirm their participation by 20 January 2014.
