Taiwan Journal of Linguistics:
A special issue on the grammar of measurement
Spring, 2014
The background
Over the past two or three decades, studies on Chinese nominal phrases have
offered two major insights: (1) despite the lack of overt determiners, Chinese
nominal phrases turn out to have a rich structure, which is parallel to those
of overt DPs in other languages; (2) Chinese nominal phrases share the same
rich and complicated semantic structure as DPs in other languages. In light of
these insights, one of the most (superficially) peculiar characters of Chinese
nominal phrases, i.e., the employment of a general classifier system, turns
out to offer more interesting suggestions for the structure of Universal
Grammar (UG) than previously envisioned. Recent studies on the syntax and
semantics of measurement constructions in natural languages have also shed
enlightening new light on this fascinating but hotly-debated issue.
To bring together different thoughts on the grammar of measurement
constructions and to advance the studies on measurement in Chinese and other
languages, a special workshop on the grammar of measurement in Chinese has
been held on June 6, 2013 at National Taiwan Normal University (as a thematic
event of the 21st Annual Meeting of the International Association for Chinese
Linguistics (IACL-21)). To help more colleagues to have better understanding
of the frontier-breaking studies on measurement constructions, Taiwan Journal
of Linguistics is pleased to announce that it will publish a special issue
about measurement in the Spring of 2014. Papers that are related (but not
limited) to the following topics are particular welcome:
1. The syntax/semantic of nominal and verbal measurement constructions in
Chinese
2. The syntax/semantics of classifiers and nominal phrases in Chinese
3. The acquisition of classifier-languages like Chinese Vs.
non-classifier-languages like English
4. The syntax/semantics of measurement constructions of non-Sinitic languages
in Taiwan and Chinese Mainland
The journal
The Taiwan Journal of Linguistics (TJL ISSN:1729-4649) is an open-access
peer-reviewed international journal of linguistics published by Crane

established linguistics journal; however, once accepted, an article must then
conform strictly to The TJL Style Sheet and The TJL Template.
