Description:

The University of Newcastle is offering two postdoctoral schemes for promising
recent PhD graduates to come to Newcastle to work intensively with linguistics
colleagues and the Faculty Research Manager to develop applications to
external funding bodies for full Postdoctoral Fellowship funding.

Two schemes are offered:
1) 2x 3 month Postdoctoral Fellowships.
2) Up to 4x short term intensive postdoctoral visitor opportunities.

Applications will be considered from individuals working in any area of
linguistics. However, priority will be given to applicants whose research
aligns with our Endangered Languages Documentation, Theory and Application
Research Group. The group has broad research concerns including
documentation/description of endangered languages; theoretical issues relating
to syntax, phonology etc; typology; and historical linguistics. The notion of
endangered language in this case is relatively broad.

1) Postdoctoral Research Development Fellowships (Position No. 2241)

Two 3-month Fellowships are available for international scholars at Academic
Level B Step 1 ($84,700 per annum pro-rata for 3 months), plus employer
superannuation contribution of 9% and return economy airfare to Newcastle.
Applicants must have a PhD from an international university and be able to
commence by September 16.

The purpose of the placement is to:
- Develop a full postdoctoral application for submission in 2014 with support
from linguistics staff and the Faculty’s Research Unit;
-  Work on publications;
- Participate in the academic life of the department.

Applications for the fellowships close on Wednesday 31 July (*NOTE SHORT TIME
FRAME*). Fellowship applications MUST be made online. For further details and
application forms please visit the application URL below.

2) Postdoctoral Visitor opportunities

Expressions of interest are invited from eligible individuals for up to four
short postdoctoral development visits to the University of Newcastle. Visits
of approximately two weeks will be negotiated with the successful applicants.
The timing of the visit must be in 2013 but exact dates open to negotiation.
It is expected that most visits will be Oct/Nov/Dec 2013. Return economy
airfare, accommodation and subsistence will be arranged for postdoctoral
visitors. No remuneration is attached to the visits.

The purpose of the visits are to:
- Work intensively on a full postdoctoral application for submission in 2014
with support from linguistics staff and the Faculty’s Research Unit;
- Meet with linguistics staff to identify research connections.

Expressions of Interest will be assessed on their strategic fit with
discipline research; track record (relative to opportunity) of the applicant;
and the quality of the proposed full postdoctoral research project.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent from an Australian or International
University (other than the University of Newcastle) awarded no earlier than
1st March 2010. The Faculty particularly encourages applicants with two to
three years’ experience since completing their doctorate.

Applications for the short visitor scheme close on Wednesday 7 August. For
further details and application forms for the visitor scheme, email Bill
Palmer at the application email address below.
