Meeting Description:
Over the last few years several projects have been commissioned to investigate opportunities for providing quality language training to PG students at UK HEIs. These projects have sought to identify both effective methods for training non-language students to read research papers in another language and to enhance the language competence of students already proficient in a language, in particular with a focus on developing academic writing and translation skills.
This one-day event both aims to showcase, through a number of case studies of completed and ongoing work, novel approaches to, as well as challenges in, teaching languages to PG students and to establish an agenda for future PG-focused language research. The aim of the event is to bring together teachers and materials developers engaged in PG language training with representatives from a range of subject areas within and outside the humanities to discuss:
- methods of delivering PG language training at UK HEIs;
- innovative ways of providing domain-specific training to PG students who need to acquire reading competence in a language for research purposes;
- bespoke language training for PG students already proficient in a language (e.g. training in interview techniques and academic writing in the target language);
- PG-focused online- and distance-learning programmes;
- the demand for and specific requirements of PG language training in various non-language disciplines within and outside the humanities;
- cost-effective ways of pooling and sharing resources and knowledge to offer bespoke PG language training across UK HEIs more efficiently.
