Meeting Description:
Poetics and Linguistics Association Annual Conference 2013; Theme ‘Mobile Stylistics’
This year’s PALA conference on ‘Mobile Stylistics’ honours the fact that stylistics has developed continuously and has always reacted flexibly and productively to new trends in linguistics and literary criticism or cultural studies. In the vein of what has been called the spatial and mobility turns (cf. Sheller and Urry 2006), the conference aims to investigate the diverse ways in which mobilities show in (literary) texts. If places, for example, are conceptualised as hybrid, progressive and open or when bodies, objects, flows and social or cognitive processes are continuously combined in new ways (Massey 1991, 1997), then there is the need to explore discourses about movement and movements in discourse. Therefore, the conference intends to foster a process of stylistic thinking about e.g. methodological or generic effects of the mobilities-paradigm on stylistics as well as effects on how we (stylistically) approach texts - past and present.
Keynote Speakers are:
Professor Nikolas Coupland (Cardiff, GB)
