Description:
In the LOT graduate school, eight major research institutes/groups of
linguistics in the Netherlands have joined forces. LOT collaborates with the
universities of Leuven and Ghent in Belgium. We are looking for four talented
and dedicated young researchers with a MA degree (or a MA thesis nearing
completion, expected graduation by the summer of 2013) in any branch of
linguistics, discourse studies or another related and relevant field.
Applicants should speak and write fluent English.
Offer
We offer a full-time (AiO) PhD position with a gross monthly salary starting
at € 2.083,- in the first year to € 2.664,- in the fourth year of appointment.
The successful candidates will be offered an initial contract as a PhD student
for 18 months, preferred starting date September 1st, 2013. Upon positive
evaluation of the PhD students’ performance the contract will be extended by
up to 2,5 years. We also offer a pension scheme, a health insurance allowance
and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective
Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities and are supplemented with a
holiday allowance of 8% per year.
The PhD student can be affiliated to any institute participating in LOT.
These positions are part of the LOT joint graduate programme, which is
financially supported by NWO (the “Netherlands Organization for Scientific
Research”). Research in LOT focuses on the following issue: “What are the
cognitive faculties underlying human language in structure and use, and what
principles govern their interaction in a communicative setting?”
The PhD positions further involve research training. As part of their
training, PhD students will take courses offered by LOT
Apply
Applications should include a 3-5 p project proposal consisting of a research
question well-grounded in existing literature, supplemented with a research
strategy, provisional plan and bibliography, a letter of motivation, a
curriculum vitae including contact and personal details, transcripts of
academic results, an MA thesis or alternative piece of written work, certified
copies of most recent diploma and passport, and the contact details of two
referees (names, affiliations and phone numbers or e-mail addresses).
Preferably, reference letters are included.
Applications that do not include a research proposal will not be taken into
consideration. Candidates are free to come up with their own research topic,
but they are strongly advised to visit the LOT website and explicitly target
their proposal at one or more of the local research groups. Please find
application form on the Utrecht University website:
