Description:

The research group Functional and Cognitive Linguistics: Grammar and Typology
(FEST) of the Department of Linguistics of the University of Leuven is looking
for applicants for a fully-funded PhD-fellowship in English Linguistics. The
position is based at the Kortrijk campus of the KU Leuven. The scholarship is
initially granted for one year, but is renewable up to a total of four years,
pending positive evaluation.

The PhD project entitled 'The use of nominal and verbal gerunds in Present-day
English. A multifunctional comparative analysis' is funded by the Research
Council of the KU Leuven and will be supervised by prof. dr. Liesbet Heyvaert
(University of Leuven). The project wants to analyze the Present-day English
use of nominal (as in (1)) and verbal gerunds (as in (2)) and aims to trace
the functional properties that underlie the language user's choice for either
a verbal or a nominal gerund, along a number of axes (e.g. referential,
aspectual, structural), through a comparative corpus-based analysis. The
analyses will be based on sets of data from the BNC corpus and the COCA corpus
(as made available by Mark Davies).
