Description:

The newly-established URPP on Language and Space at the University of Zurich
invites applications for the position of Director of the GISLab (post-doctoral
fellow).

The URPP explores the interface between language and space with regard to (a)
the distribution of languages and linguistic structures in geographical and
social space; and (b) the embedding of speech in the spatial environment as
shaped by perception, motion and action. The URPP combines insights from
dialectology, typology and interactional linguistics. A key goal of the URPP
is the foundation of three new labs: one for GIS-based linguistics (GISLab),
one for corpus linguistics (CorpusLab), and one for video-based linguistics
(VideoLab). The labs are expected to develop and apply advanced methods and
technologies in their area of specialization.

The GISLab will be hosted within the GIScience Center of the Department of
Geography. The GIScience Center encompasses several research groups working on
diverse topics including language and space, geographic information retrieval,
digital terrain modeling, environmental geoinformatics, movement analysis,
digital cartography, geovisual analytics, and spatial cogni tion. For more
information, see http://www.geo.uzh.ch/gis.

In coordination with the URPP Board and the GIScience members of the URPP, the
prospective director will build up the GISLab as a center for the development
and use of GIScience methods that support research in the URPP. The director
will develop his or her own profile and research agenda, and will conduct
research on the language and space interface in collaboration with members of
the URPP (e.g. on spatially related questions of language contact, areal
diffusion, or language in landscape description). The prospective director is
also expected to apply for third-party funding. The position includes the
option of teaching in graduate courses. The director will also coordinate
services, support and training for linguistic researchers of the URPP who seek
to use GIScience methods in their work. In this task, s/he will be supported
by student assistants and PhD students affiliated with the lab.

We are looking for a highly motivated, original thinker with coordination
skills, who might still be rather junior but has the ambition to build up a
successful research and service group. Applicants will have a PhD in GIScience
or related field and a keen interest to collaborate with linguists of very
diverse backgrounds (e.g. dialectology, areal typology, interactional
linguistics, computational linguistics, general linguistics). Applicants with
a PhD degree in computational linguistics or (geographic) information
retrieval will also be considered, as long as they have experience in GIS
techniques, and the willingness to work on research topics with an important
geographic and GIScience dimension. A strong publication record as well as
demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary research is expected. A record of
successful grant writing and programming skills are considered assets.
Applicants must have a very good standard of written and spoken English.
Fluency in one or more of Switzerland’s national languages would also be an
advantage.

Send CV and publication list, an outline of the research agenda you would
propose for the GISLab, and contact details for three referees (incl. e-mail
addresses) in a single PDF document, and with reference “GISLabDirector”, to
the application email by 15 June 2013. The position will start on 1 Aug 2013.
It is initially limited until 31 Dec 2016, with an optional extension.
