Inter-individual variation in attitudes towards code-switching and self-reported frequency of code-switching among adult multilinguals

Abstract:  
The present study is a large-scale quantitative analysis of inter-individual variation (linked to the degree of multilingualism in childhood and at present, sociobiographical variables (gender, age, education level) and personality traits - Extraversion, Neuroticism, Tolerance of Ambiguity and Cognitive Empathy- in attitudes towards code-switching (CS) and self-reported frequency of CS among 2116 adult multilinguals from around the world. Data were collected through an on-line questionnaire. We found that attitudes towards CS and self-reported frequency of CS are linked to some personality traits, language learning history and current linguistic practices, as well as some sociobiographical variables.
