Job Title: Educational Postdoctoral Researcher
Job Rank: Post Doc
Specialty Areas: General Linguistics
Description:
The Department of Linguistics at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to serve as part of UBC’s Flexible Learning Initiative, a multi-year program for study of and innovation in teaching and learning in the Faculty of Arts, at a salary of $62,700 annually.
We seek individuals to work with faculty leads on their projects in this department, with other postdocs, ArtsISIT (instructional support & technology) staff, and other campus units (the Centre for Teaching and Learning; Information Technology; etc.) to develop and coordinate Linguistics courses and curriculum. You will be given training opportunities led by educational researchers, evaluation experts and teaching experts as well as technology experts to support your work.
You will be a key member of the Flexible Learning Project team, and you will be involved in a range of educational research and development activities; developing course and program level learning objectives, assessments, and pedagogical designs; administering and evaluating assessments of student learning and of student approaches to studying Linguistics; and supervising and guiding development and testing of teaching and learning materials including technology-enhanced learning resources.
Project teams will focus on areas such as activities for the development and retention of fundamental disciplinary skills, assessment tools to track these skills, and IT-based resources to support these skills across the curriculum.
Candidates should have completed a Ph.D. in Linguistics, and have teaching experience (ideally including undergraduate and introductory courses). Candidates should have excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, a strong personal commitment to Linguistics teaching and pedagogy, and an ability to work independently and meet deadlines. English fluency is required. Experience in educational materials or curriculum development, on-line teaching, project management, databases, or multi-media technology will be considered assets, as will a broad knowledge of different sub-areas of Linguistics, and familiarity with current pedagogical research and IT learning resources at the post-secondary level.
UBC hires on the basis of merit and is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community. We especially welcome applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and others with the skills and knowledge to productively engage with diverse communities.
Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority.
The appointment will be for 1 year, starting July 1, 2013, and may be renewable for 1 year depending on funding availability and performance. Applicants should submit a CV, statement of teaching interests, and three reference letters to the application address below.
