Dissertation Abstract:
The dissertation is a descriptive grammar of Jarawa language of South
Andamanese Group of Andamanese Language family spoken in the Andaman
Islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India. The work is based on the
primary data obtained from the monolingual Jarawa community by the author
during his fieldwork conducted over four years. Besides a brief
introduction to the islands, Jarawa community, their social and cultural
practices, the dissertation contains chapters on phonetics and phonology,
morphology and syntax of the language. The chapter on Phonetics and
phonology deals with the sounds and sound system of the language. The
chapter on morphology contains information about noun morphology, verbal
morphology, adjectives, adverbs, post-positions. This chapter also
describes the word formation processes of the language, namely compounding,
reduplication and denominalization. The chapter on syntax focuses on clause
structures of the language. It includes, verbless clause, verbal clause,
interrogative constructions, imperatives, negation, and cleft
constructions. This study also makes an attempt to inquire how
typologically this language behaves.
