Job Rank: Assistant Professor

Description:

The Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development’s Teaching and Curriculum Program invites applications for a full-time clinical-track position in TESOL/Foreign Languages at the assistant professor rank, starting with the academic year 2014-2015.

Main responsibilities for this position include directing and teaching in the TESOL/Foreign Language teacher preparation program as well as a new TESOL program preparing for positions outside of US K-12 schools, and supporting the Warner School’s international efforts more generally. More specifically, the position will involve directing our foreign language and two TESOL programs (K-12 and international), teaching a total of 4-6 graduate courses each year (depending on other responsibilities assumed), advising students in TESOL and Foreign Languages education,
doing some field supervision for teacher candidates seeking NYS teaching certification in TESOL or a foreign language, engaging in clinical scholarship and participating in other university, community, and professional service. It would be highly desirable for the candidate to be able to supervise Ed.D. doctoral dissertations.

Applicants should have a background in teacher preparation, with specialization in language education, particularly TESOL, as well as experience with a variety of research methodologies, including action research. Preferred candidates will have an earned doctorate (or a completed doctorate by the start date) in language education (TESOL/FL) or a related field such as applied linguistics, experience teaching in and/or directing TESOL/foreign language programs, K-12 teaching experience in the focus area, experience teaching English abroad, and/or experience working with international students.

The Teaching and Curriculum Program within which this position is nested offers master’s and doctoral degree programs as well as programs that lead to NYS teacher certification at the initial and professional levels. All these programs emphasize a social, historical, and contextual approach to education that is rooted in an interdisciplinary perspective, and build on the integration of theory and practice. The position requires a commitment to teacher education, school reform, diversity, inclusion, and social justice, as well as a strong theoretical background and a scholarly agenda that focuses specifically on practice. The University of Rochester has been awarded a 5-year professional development grant from the U.S. Department of Education to prepare K-12 teachers, counselors and administrators to better serve English language learners, which offers interesting opportunities for engaging in cutting-edge professional development and research efforts.

To apply send a (1) letter of application stating teaching, community outreach and research interests, (2) current vita, (3) samples of publications or other writing and evidence of professional work, and (4) letters of reference to Chris Ghinazzi at the application address below.

We will begin formal review of applications by October 29, 2013, while continuing to process later
applications until the position is filled. Please contact Dr. Joanne Larson, Search Committee Chair, at the contact email address below if you have any questions.
