Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics
Subject Language(s): English (eng)
Meeting Description:
The goal of the DRAL 2/ILA 2014 International Conference is to share and learn about a variety of aspects of doing research in applied linguistics and independent learning and learner autonomy.
Topics for DRAL 2:
- Purposes and uses of research in applied linguistics
- Research paradigms and their applications
- Issues in data collection and analysis
- Experiences of research and development as a researcher
-Research into autonomy and lifelong learning
Topics for ILA 2014:
- Autonomy inside and outside the classroom
- Teacher and researcher autonomy
- Self-access learning
- Autonomy and learning environment (classroom, distance, technology supported, language learning centres, etc.)
- Autonomy and assessment
- Autonomy and identity
- Autonomy and agency (motivation and strategies)
For days 1 and 2, papers will focus on research issues, rather than subject area issues. For example, papers could discuss the appropriacy of a particular research paradigm, problems and solutions in data analysis, or the ways in which conducting research affected teaching. Papers can report findings concerning the subject area, but should at least include a substantial discussion of issues concerning conducting research. Papers on day 2 should combine research issues and autonomy. Papers concerning issues of independent learning and learner autonomy will be presented on day 3.
The conference will include papers (30 min), papers by PhD students (30 min), a forum for novice researchers* (10 min) and poster presentations.
Forum for Novice Researchers is for teachers who want to begin their research career. Presenter will speak for up to 10 minutes and then receive feedback from the audience.
Plenary speakers include Guy Cook (King's College, London), Phil Benson (Hong Kong Institute of Education) and Phil Chappell (Macquarie University).
