The research group on Greek aspect and the University Michel de Montaigne-Bordeaux 3 are organizing an international colloquium on the Greek future expressions and their history for October 10-11, 2014.

The future is back: many publications and recent works show a renewed interest in the future on the part of linguists. One of the reasons for this interests consists in the diversity of problems that it poses: morphological mutability, semantic uncertainty, in terms of tense, mood, and aspect as well as of reference, as well as pragmatic uncertainty, in its relationship to suggestions and imperative orders. This elusive character can only excite the curiosity of linguists.

This colloquium will be centered essentially on one language (if one may call it that), Greek, which has the distinction of offering nearly 35 centuries of almost continuous documentation. That is to say that the diachronic perspective will be essential.

Le groupe de recherche sur l'aspect en grec et l'université Michel de Montaigne-Bordeaux3 organisent les 10 et 11 octobre 2014 un colloque international sur les futurs grecs et leur histoire.

Le futur est de retour: plusieurs publications et ouvrages récents manifestent un regain d'intérêt des linguistes pour le futur. Une des raisons de cet intérêt consiste dans la diversité des problèmes qu'il pose: mutabilité morphologique, incertitude sémantique, tant du point de vue du temps, du mode et de l'aspect que de celui de la référence, incertitude pragmatique aussi entre la suggestion et l'ordre impératif. Ce caractère insaisissable ne peut que susciter la curiosité des linguistes.

Ce colloque sera centré essentiellement sur une langue (si l'on peut dire), le grec, qui a la particularité d'offrir à peu près 35 siècles de documentation presque continue. C'est dire que la perspective diachronique sera essentielle. 

Call for Papers:

The principal themes to be covered in the presentations will be the following:

- the history of conceptions of the Greek future in the grammarians since antiquity. While grammatical texts will play a central role, rhetorical, critical, and philosophical texts will also be important.
- the different grammaticalized forms of the future, from a morphological perspective. Their different developments will be investigated, taking into consideration not only their diversity and relationships with the other forms of the verbal system, but also dialectal variation.
- syntactic features (subordination, coordination)

As far as semantics and pragmatics are concerned, there will be consideration of everything that can clarify the functioning of futures, simple or periphrastic, and of the various means of referring to and representing the future. One could also approach the category of the future at the interactional level of discourse, looking at discursive elaborations, informational structure, as well as the place of relevant phenomena in the whole of the system of tense, aspect, mood, and diathesis.

Also welcome are papers discussing anthropological, cognitive, and cultural representations of the Greek future, not necessarily limited to a simple conception of time and temporality.

All periods of Greek will be taken into consideration, from the Mycenaean tablets to the most recent evidence from the contemporary language. All diachronic distributional evidence will be investigated, from variations within the corpus of an individual author to stretches of time of very long durative, capable of revealing discontinuities and renewals in the grammatical system.

It will also be possible to situate the Greek facts in a wider framework: its Indo-European origins, contact with other Mediterranean languages, or general typological considerations.

No particular theoretical frameworks will be favored; it is important only that they be explicit and supported by in-depth analysis of the data arising from a coherent corpus.

Each presentation will be allowed 25 minutes, plus 15 minutes for discussion. The Conference languages will be French and English.

Appel à communication :

Les principaux thèmes sur lesquels porteront les propositions d'exposés seront les suivants:

- l'histoire des conceptions du futur grec chez les grammairiens depuis l'Antiquité. Si les textes grammaticaux joueront un rôle central dans les recherches, on ne négligera pas les textes rhétoriques , critiques et philosophiques.
- les différentes formes grammaticalisées du futur, dans leurs aspects morphologiques: on s'interrogera sur les différentes évolutions en tenant compte à la fois de leur diversité et des rapports avec les autres formes du système verbal, mais aussi de la variété dialectale. 
- les aspects syntaxiques (subordination, coordination) pourront être utilement explorés.

En ce qui concerne les aspects sémantiques et pragmatiques, on explorera tout ce qui peut éclairer le fonctionnement des futurs, simples ou périphrastiques, et des divers moyens de référer à l'avenir et de se le représenter. On pourra ainsi envisager la catégorie du futur sur le plan de l'interlocution, des élaborations discursives, de la structure informationnelle, mais aussi de la place des phénomènes concernés dans l'ensemble du système temporel, aspectuel, modal et diathétique.

On pourra aussi s'intéresser aux représentations anthropologiques, cognitives et culturelles de la catégorie du futur grec, sans s'enfermer nécessairement dans une simple conception du temps et de la temporalité.

Toutes les époques du grec seront prises en compte, depuis les tablettes mycéniennes jusqu'aux manifestations les plus récentes de la langue contemporaine. Toutes les granulométries de la diachronie seront explorées, depuis les variations à l'intérieur du corpus d'un auteur jusqu'à des phases de très longues durées susceptibles de faire apparaître des ruptures et des reconstructions dans le système grammatical.

Il sera intéressant le cas échéant de situer les faits grecs dans un cadre plus large, tant par rapport aux origines indo-européennes que dans les contacts de langues et dans une perspective typologique.

Aucun cadre théorique n'est privilégié, à condition qu'il soit explicite et qu'il s'appuie sur un travail approfondi des données issues d'un corpus cohérent.

Les exposés seront de 25 mn et seront suivies de 15 mn de discussion. Les langues acceptées sont le français et l'anglais.
