Language and Learning. The history of linguistics in the context of education.
Leiden University, 5-6 June 2014
XXV. Internationales Kolloquium des Studienkreises Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaft
Keynote Speakers:
Nils Langer (University of Bristol)
Ineke Sluiter (Leiden University)
>From its earliest beginnings up to the present day, linguistics has been closely connected with the domain of education. Ancient grammarians were active as teachers, and grammatical treatises played an important role in the Greek and Roman school curriculum. The Grammaire générale et raisonnée de Port-Royal (1660) is a landmark in the history of linguistics, but is also inspired by the earlier educational activities of one of its authors, Claude Lancelot, who published pedagogical grammars of Latin and Greek. The nineteenth-century invention of syntactic parsing immediately found its way into schoolbooks, and remains the main linguistic topic offered in Dutch secondary education today.
The conference Language and Learning. The history of linguistics in the context of education will focus on the interaction between linguistics as the study of language, and education as the field of language teaching and learning.
Call for Papers:
We welcome all papers that examine the relationship between the history of linguistics and education. Possible topics include the following:
- The interaction between linguists and language teachers, and between linguistics and language teaching
- The emergence of linguistic theories from educational practices and school curricula
- The implementation of new linguistic theories and insights in educational practices and curricula
- Metalinguistic awareness: the teaching of ‘mother tongue’ grammar to ‘mother tongue’ speakers
- Prescription and stigmatization in education
- The institutionalization of linguistic approaches as academic disciplines
- (Foreign) language teachers and methods as carriers of linguistic knowledge
- The history of applied linguistics
- Grammarians and linguists as ‘guardians of language’
The conference languages are English and German. Presentations will be 20 minutes, followed by discussion time. The deadline for proposals is 15 November 2013. Notification of acceptance will be given in January 2014. Abstracts of no more than 300 words may be sent to the conference organizers through SGdS2014 at hum.leidenuniv.nl.
