Professorship (W 2) in Postcolonial Language Studies (temporary for five years)

Applicants should have internationally recognized expertise in (Post)Colonial Language Studies with a specific focus on language contexts shaped by European colonialism. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate language-related research with respect to (post)colonialism in Africa and the Pacific region. The professorship is meant to address the linguistic side of colonialism in at least two areas shaped by European colonial powers, e.g. Belgium, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands. Candidates will also be asked to engage in long-term collective research activities on (post)colonial language contact, language evaluation and language politics, with a particular focus on Pidgin and Creole languages and discourse linguistics in the context of migration, diaspora and hybridisation. The professorship is situated in the Bremen research focus "Language in Colonial Contexts" und shall co-develop and represent the research field of (Post)colonial Linguistics internationally.

In addition to the pre-conditions of civil service law, a relevant doctoral dissertation, as well as other pertinent academic achievements of outstanding quality, evidenced, for instance, by a junior professorship, by a post-doctoral thesis or by an equivalent publication record are essential. A further requirement is that the successful candidates can demonstrate their pedagogical suitability by a documented teaching experience. Candidates need to be aware that they will be expected to acquire some fluency in the German language in the early course of their five year tenure.

We expect a readiness to cooperate with other research areas within and outside the University of Bremen. We also expect the applicant’s willingness to acquire third-party funds as well as an openness to innovations in teaching methods. Experience with media supported forms of teaching is desirable as well as the preparedness to consider gender aspects in research and teaching.
