Meeting Description:

Goal: To bring together teachers and researchers who wish to integrate intercultural communication and culture learning into their foreign language teaching. 

Dates: April 25-27, 2014
Location: English Language Center, Shantou University, 243 Daxue Road, Shantou, Guangdong, China

To help our students to develop communicative competence, we recognize that they do not need to learn the English of one specific culture, but must have the competence to interact with and negotiate meaning with interlocutors from a variety of cultures all using English as a medium of communication. Therefore, the English Language Center at Shantou University is bringing together English language researchers and educators who wish to integrate intercultural communication and culture learning into their foreign language teaching. We welcome all those interested in joining in a dialogue on teaching language and building intercultural competence in ourselves and our students.

Call for Papers:

Topics: 

Papers, workshops and poster sessions should address the relationship between language teaching/learning and one or more of the following topics:

- Intercultural communication
- Preparing students for intercultural encounters in their home cultures
- Culture teaching/learning
- Teaching/learning culture through films and TV
- Teaching/learning culture through magazines, fiction, websites and other authentic reading materials
- Teaching/learning culture through social media
- Teaching a culture that is not your own
- Independent culture learning
- Cross-cultural adaptation
- Preparing students for study abroad
- Teaching as a sojourner in a new culture
- Intercultural classrooms
- Teaching students of a culture different from your own
- Teaching in multicultural classrooms

Proposal Types: 

There are three types of sessions: papers, workshops, and poster sessions. All proposals should be related to the conference theme - Teaching Language Toward Intercultural Competence.

- Paper sessions report on recent unpublished research. These are allocated 40 minutes (30 minutes presentation and 10 minutes discussion).
- Workshops demonstrate tested teaching techniques and are normally allocated 40 minutes. (A limited number of 90 minute sessions may also be available.)
- Poster sessions report on work in progress or action research. These will be located in the Exhibition Area and scheduled during one of the conference break periods.

Proposal Submission Guidelines:

Proposals must conform to these specified guidelines and reach the conference committee by October 31, 2013. Submissions must be made online by registering and logging in at http://elc.stu.edu.cn/conf2014/. The submission should include: title of paper, family name(s), given name(s), institutional affiliation, current position, email address, topic(s), abstract (up to 200 words), and keywords (up to 5) that best describe the subject of your submission. Notification of acceptance will be sent by November 30, 2013. Please submit only one proposal per author. A bio (up to 50 words) should also be submitted separately from the proposal submission. Be sure to mention the topic or subtopic which best encompasses your work and any technical requirements you may have for your presentation.
