Description:

The Angus McIntosh Centre for Historical Linguistics, part of the Department of Linguistics and English Language, is seeking to appoint two Postdoctoral Research Assistants to investigate diversity in Scots of the period 1380–1500. Both positions are part of an AHRC-funded research project, From Inglis to Scots (‘FITS’): Mapping Sounds to Spellings, which aims to refine and significantly extend current knowledge of the phonological history of Older Scots. The successful applicants will have a PhD in a relevant discipline and research experience in areas relevant to the project. These positions are full time and fixed term for 38 months tenable from 18th August 2014.

Salary: £30,728 - £36,661 per annum

Main Responsibilities  (Approximate % of Time)
1. Reconstruct individual form histories to uncover the evolution of 15th-century Scots sound systems (70%). This will involve: 
- Reconstructing ‘canonical’ late Old English (where possible, Old Anglian and specifically Old Northumbrian) and Old Norse forms as presumed input to the Older Scots materials. 
- Tracing the development of each late Old English/Old Norse input form into the set of spelling variants attested in a corpus of Older Scots texts. 
- Entering the results of each analysis in a project database. 
2. Catalogue and describe in a Corpus of Changes the linguistic developments (phonological and orthographic) involved in the development of each attested Older Scots form from its Old English/Old Norse progenitor (15%). 
3. Disseminate research outputs and findings via journal articles and conference papers so that they may lead to advances in relevant disciplines (5%) .
4. Undertake teaching and demonstrating work – including associated training, preparatory, marking and examination duties – on topics related to the research project (5%). 
5. Present papers at two international conferences (5%): 
- Towards the end of year one: one jointly-authored paper outlining the project’s objectives, methods and planned digital outputs. 
- Towards the end of year two: one jointly-authored or two single-authored papers illustrating some of the questions posed by the Older Scots data and showing how they can be answered by means of the project’s digital outputs.
