University or Organization: Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology
Department: Linguistics
Job Location: Leipzig, Germany
Web Address: http://www.eva.mpg.de/linguistics
Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow (Phonetic Transcription)
Job Rank: Post Doc; Researcher
Specialty Areas: Historical Linguistics; Phonetics
Required Language(s): Aymaran
Germanic
Quechuan
Romance
Slavic
Description:
Applications are invited for up to four short-term posts in phonetic transcription, as a postdoctoral fellow at the linguistics department of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. The posts are open to phoneticians who have already completed, or are close to completing a Ph.D.. Some presence in Leipzig will be required, especially at the start and end of the contract, although it may be possible for some of the transcription work to be done remotely.
Applications should be submitted, and appointments will be made, as soon as possible. Posts will run from six to twelve months, and all work must be completed by the end of May 2015.
Candidates must combine two forms of expertise and experience: (1) transcription at our target level of relatively close phonetic transcription; but informed by (2) extensive knowledge of historical/comparative linguistics of sound change, especially at the dialect and accent levels (regional, rather than socio-linguistic or idiolectal).
Three of the posts will be filled preferably by a phonetician who is a native speaker of a language from the Romance, Slavic and Germanic families respectively. The candidate should have wide knowledge of the historical linguistics of that family, and of the phonetic diversity across the member languages and dialects within it. The fourth post is on indigenous languages of the Andes, particularly Quechua and Aymara, and is open more widely.
Your transcriptions will feed into a major new online database, and research to measure phonetic distances between the member languages and dialects of each family. Research outputs will include publication opportunities for the phonetician transcriber, and credits on a major new website of phonetic diversity across language families. For more on the nature of this research, see the old websites at www.soundcomparisons.com and www.languagesandpeoples.com/Germanic and the papers at https://eva-mpg.academia.edu/PaulHeggarty/Linguistics:-Quantitative-&-Phylogenetics.
Pay will follow the German public service pay scale (TVöD), dependent on the applicant’s experience, and will be by “Stipendium”. The Max Planck Society is concerned to employ more disabled people; applications from disabled people are explicitly sought. The Max Planck Society wishes to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented; women are therefore explicitly encouraged to apply.
Applications may be submitted in English, German, French, Italian or Spanish, and should consist of:
- Your curriculum vitae.
- A description (maximum 750 words) of your research interests and your experience as a phonetician and transcriber, as relevant to the expertise required, as set out above.
- An abstract (maximum 750 words) of your Ph.D. topic.
- A list of your publications, or a link to a personal website that shows them.
- You may also attach up to two sample publications if you feel they help illustrate your suitability for this post.
- Names and contact details of two referees.
The above are to be submitted as attachments to an email to Dr Paul Heggarty at the email address below. Please use the subject line “Application for phonetics postdoc for the ___ language family”, and specify which of the four posts (Romance, Slavic, Germanic, Andes) you apply for.
