The Discourse of Digital Civic Engagement: Perspectives from the Developing World

Civic engagement has been the focus of scholarly publications in recent times (Bennet, 2008; Norris, 2009; McGaugey & Ayers 2003; Solo, 2014). Perspectives of scholars on this subject differ as their discipline orientation. Political scientists, sociologists, psychologists and computer scientist have contributed to scholarship on digital civic engagements. This book approaches the subject from the linguist’s perspective, examining the discursive aspect. Discourse analytic angles to civic engagements, such as critical discourse analysis, discursive pragmatics and semiotics, multimodal discourse analysis, and computer-mediated discourse analysis will be engaged by contributors. In addition, most publications on digital civic engagements have focused more on the roles in advanced democracies. This collection will focus on the developing world where in recent times, the digital media have been playing prominent roles in political activism.  

This publication will bring together scholarly works on digital civic engagement from the developing countries of the world. The book will serve as a general reference book for scholars of language and politics in general and a primary reference source for those whose interests are mainly on the discursive civic engagements in CMC  (computer-mediated communication). The editors invite abstracts/proposals of contributions from scholars and researchers from different regions of the world on any of the following areas (but not necessarily limited to them):  

- Implications of Civic Engagements for democratic practices in developing world
- The discourse of Facebook and civic engagement
- Discursive perspectives on Twitter and political activism in Africa
- Digital political campaigns in the developing world
- Discursive construction of 'Others' in digital civic engagement
- Power and ideology in digital civic engagement
- Legitimization and coercion in digital political advertising 
- Radical discourse in the cyberspace
- Discourse of political protests in the developing world
- Discourse of social mobilization through mobile technologies
- Discourse pragmatics of online political campaigns
- Hegemony in online political campaign
- Multimodal discourse analysis of protest movements 
- Discursive practices in SMS political campaigns
- Discourse of digital civic political enlightenment 
- Youth activism and participatory politics, discourse perspectives
- Discourse of radicalist Islamic militancy on the cyberspace
- Discursive aspects of Youtubification of Politics
- Blogging and political activism
- Discursive practices in asynchronous political discussion forums
- Discourse of human rights and NGOs on the cyberspace
- Politeness in online protest discourse 
- Humor in online protest discourse
- Indigenous languages in digital civic engagement
- Identity construction online political campaign

Submission Procedure: The abstracts/proposals should be 300–500 words in length (excluding bibliography) in Microsoft Word format. An abstract/proposal should contain the following information:
(a) Title of proposed chapter
(b) Name of authors(s)
(c) E-mail address and affiliation
(d) Specific details on area to be covered

They should be submitted to Rotimi Taiwo (ferotai at yahoo.com) or Tunde Opeibi (drtundeopeibi at gmail.com) on or before 15th November 2014. The editors will then make a selection of abstracts/proposals in order to ensure coherence of the whole volume. The authors will be notified about the acceptance of their abstracts/proposals by 30th  December, 2014. The authors of accepted abstracts will be expected to contribute a chapter of maximum 9,000 words in length (including notes and bibliography) and to peer review two other chapters. A first draft of the individual papers will be due by 1st April, 2015, after which the draft papers will be submitted to internal and external peer review. This book is tentatively scheduled for publishing in last quarter of 2015 by IGI Global Publishing Company, Hershey, New York, USA.
